Why I decided to return to school?

Published 26 May 2017

I have come to a point in life that many people have not. I have made a firm decision to recommit myself to pursuing my dreams. While there are those who believe that with an ounce of luck and a ton of persistence anything can be accomplished, I believe that there is no reason to expend so much energy and rely on luck. I believe in taking hold of my destiny and carving out a future for myself based on the decisions that I make in life. Life is simply too short and too precious to be left to luck alone. This is why I have chosen to apply for the Psychology Program at this prestigious academic institution.

My decision to return to school was perhaps brought about initially by the circumstance but it is something that I have embraced and accepted. I am married and have two daughters with a boy on the way. Previous to this experience, I was in the Navy for 5 years after High School. It is not easy to decide to continue one’s studies especially at this point in my life but I have come to understand that there is more for me to gain for me and the people that depend on me by continuing in the pursuit of higher education.

This is the reason for pursuing this opportunity to pursue a degree in Psychology. As the world continues to change and the workplace becomes more and more challenging and competitive, it becomes imperative for anyone looking for a successful career to not only have the drive to succeed but also the training and expertise to do so. I am not saying that I do not have the training and expertise at the moment but I do believe that there is still room for more.

I am occasionally asked by my friends, my teachers and my parents where I see myself in the future. Honestly, I have to admit that I am not certain where I will be in the future. I definitely know where I want to be in the future but knowing exactly where I will be in the future is something even the wisest of seers cannot predict. Yet there is a way by which the options and the roads that one travels on this journey of life can be narrowed down in a such a way as to limit the endless possibilities to a few highly probable ones that are amenable to the journeyman. By being prepared and by having the right equipment (in this case, a proper education) one can probably predict, with a high degree of certainty, what the outcome may be. This is what I plan to do, narrow down my options and try my best to attain that dream I have of pursuing my education in psychology.

A key experience of mine came when I was in high school because it was here that I had to deal with family loss. This was a very difficult time for me. During this time, I realized the eagerness of learning and growing adaptability of the human condition. It was my uncle, who is a psychologist, who helped me through the emotional and mental pain. Through this experience, I not only became a stronger individual but also a more focused person.

It did not take long for me to take this newfound knowledge and realization and mold it as my own. As such, I would hold counseling sessions for friends and this was first time that I actually learned how to share my knowledge with the others. I realized that the vital matter of grave concern in the community is the listening and understanding factor. Many people want to voice out their frustrations but are unable to yet through my actions, I believe that I was able to help them out.

On a personal level, I have been able to accomplish several things over the course of my career. As part of the Navy, I participated in several exercises in service of the Country. I also took part in several community service programs in order to be able to give back to a country that I deeply care for. It may not seem like a big accomplishment for many people but that day marked the culmination of the years that I put in and the verified my success in the face of the many various challenges that I faced along the way. It does not appear on any transcript or college record but the fact that I am most proud of is that I accomplished all of this while being a parent for two very lovely children.

That is why I believe that this course is a crucial step for me. My success and my accomplishments here will herald the beginning of the fulfillment of my personal and professional goals. It is said that the one thing that nobody can ever take away from you is your education and that is the one thing that I plan to not only gain for myself but for others as well. In time, I hope to not only create a better future for myself through the help of a fine education but also to create a better future for my three young children who have the whole world ahead of them.

While I personally believe that “there is no such thing as a free lunch” and that everything a person has in life must come from hard work and perseverance, I also believe in charity. I believe in helping others who do not have much in life. I believe in helping people regardless of their nation, race or creed. I believe in being a better person so I can best help myself and others around me. I believe that this academic environment is the best place for me to turn these beliefs into realities. I am fully aware of the significance of being considered for acceptance, and I am sincerely grateful for your time and consideration of my application
