Trying to Learn and Speak English

28 Feb 2017Other Essays

Learning the English language is one of my mind-boggling experiences. I have been trying to learn and speak English fluently my whole life. However, I know that there is nothing wrong with that as learning this particular language is a never-ending process. When I am finally capable to speak the language with such great confidence, I will surely find it as an achievement and a fulfilling experience.
I have been studying the English language through various ways. The main foundation of my acquisition of this language is through education. The English language is embedded in the education process, it is included in the curriculum and some of the other subjects are taught using this medium.

Since I stepped into school, I have been studying the English language. I started from learning the English alphabet. I memorized the alphabet as I enjoyed chatting with my friends through my native tongue. I talked endlessly about anything using the language I am accustomed to.When I climbed up to primary school, I gradually learned constructing simple English sentences. Oftentimes, the sentences I used to make described something. I remember my grade school teacher holding an apple and asking us what we can say about the apple. Some described it as red, while others said it was delicious. Nevertheless, the overall aim of the activity was to hone our ability to construct English sentences and verbally express these sentences in accordance to the English rules of pronunciation and grammar.

As we were only eight-year-old kids, many of us committed mistakes in pronouncing the English words. Hence, given our age, minor errors in fluency were forgiven. Still, those who were able to speak in English flawlessly and consistently seemed like they conquered the world. They displayed an aura of superiority over the other students.

When I entered high school, I was bombarded with essays to write for different subjects. It seemed that writing essays suddenly became a fad for the learning facilitators that they started giving students assignments, especially in English classes where students were assigned to do compositions about various things. For instance, when the classes resumed after summer, we were asked to do an essay about our summer vacation.

The goal of the writing activities was to further develop our usage of and fluency in the English language. These activities were assigned to us in preparation for our college education, as universities require applying students to submit an admission essay. They also served as our foundation when we enter the realm of the adult world where an excellent command of English is necessary. We needed to learn how to convey messages in English to achieve understanding and to land on our desired jobs.

In one of my English classes in high school, I experienced using the school facility called the “speech laboratory.” The facility was created to let students practice their speech ability. Many students dreaded speaking in front of the class because they were scared that they would commit mistakes and humiliate themselves. However, the speech lab eliminated these barriers, for a student can only be heard by the other person across the glass room by means of headphones. Thus, the speech lab prevented the students from speaking in English.

I further improved my English speaking skills when I pursued college education and mingled with different kinds of people. Life in college is far from what I expected. Everybody seems so good in his or her chosen field. Students can study different languages. They also have the option to choose which subjects they would like to take. The English language is very much needed in all aspects of my college education. There are professors who will ask you to answer their questions in English, and the essays and exams in Math and Science are supposed to be in the English language.

I further honed my English skills and acquired new words and phrase through conversing with my co-workers and watching English cartoon shows. The conversation I make and hear play significant roles in further developing my English skills.

Learning the English language is quite difficult, especially when we are accustomed to the language we have been using since we were little. However, the most difficult part is testing your skills by talking to foreigners who speak English as their first language. I came across a foreigner once and he asked for directions. He spoke so fast with his American accent that I was not able to fully comprehend what he said. Luckily, I was able to make out the place he was looking for, so I just pointed towards the direction where the place was located. When he said thank you and walked away, I breathed a sigh of relief. I could not believe myself for not being able to utter even a single word, when I brag about being able to speak English fluently to my family.

Hence, the hardest process in learning and speaking a second language is applying what you learned and putting your skills on the spot, especially when you are talking to someone who is highly proficient with the language. Learning the grammar and other aspects of the English language is easy, as anyone can learn them in school. Yet, you cannot help but feel a little intimidated when you speak English to someone whose English speaking skills are greater than yours.

We have this belief that citizens of a country where English is the first language are good in that language. On the contrary, this is not the cause. It only appears like they are an expert on the language as they speak it so casually, but they also have flaws when they converse in English.I believe that learning the English language is highly important as it is the international language that is commonly used in all parts of the world. English is used in textbooks published and disseminated all over the world. Various information and many of the international transactions are also in English.

Learning English as a second language is quite difficult, especially when you are aware that there are foreigners who speak it very well. You feel intimidated when you speak this language.
Many countries imposed that they retain their national language but still include English in their courses. For example, in India, The president, Jawaharlal Nehru declared that the English language should still be included in India's educational system in an indefinite time while keeping Hindi as their national language (Most Important Language, 1956).Many institutions are going global and are extending their services to all parts of the world. They use the English language in conveying their messages and hand out information about them. It is recognized as the global tongue, for English is understood and spoken in many countries.

Learning the English language should not be taken for granted and undermined. Knowing how to speak English very well can be a powerful tool in achieving one's goal. Professional job interviews are done in English. It also helps us understand the news and issues presented in English in the foreign channels which concern the whole world and affect the lives of many people. In some way, the English language also unifies all members of the global society. Through this common language spoken by people in most of the countries, we can achieve understanding and we are assured to be understood. Even the United Nations leaders are able to deliberate and confer on how to resolve worldwide issues, which they cannot accomplish without being proficient in the English language.

In most cases, learning the English language has become necessary due to the emergence of globalization. As business transactions take place between members of different countries, conveying messages properly and appropriately is of the essence. In my personal view, there is really nothing hard in learning something new as long as you have the heart and will to learn it. I, too, was afraid at first, but as I saw the changes and developments, I began to appreciate everything I learned, although it was a little difficult.
