World’s Population Growth

11 Sep 2017Other Essays

With the passage of time, the world in expanding in terms of the people that it holds. As years progress, the total number of people is growing and thus the population, on a general basis, is on the rise. Population growth is basically the increase or decrease in population with respect to time. Population growth can be measured by the number of persons in a population per unit time. This essay will focus on the Growth rates worldwide and how it influences and affects the world. Also, the advantages and disadvantages of using Growth rate worldwide will be pointed out.

Population growth rate is the fractional rate of the change in the population over time. It is examined. It is expressed as a ratio. When the growth ratio is positive it indicates that the population is increasing while a negative rate points towards a decline in population. Birth rates and death rates help to examine and predict the population growth of a region. The birth rate is the number of births with respect to the population in a region in a given period of time while death or mortality rate is a measure of the number of deaths in a population.

Increasing or decreasing growth rates are directly proportional to the population size of a region. The growth rate indicates rate and extent at which the population size is increasing. How quickly the population size will double itself depends upon the growth rate. A higher growth rate will take less time to double as compared to a slower growth rate. Higher growth rate means that a country has a high birth rate and a low death rate which means that the ratio of the number of births is more as compared to the number of deaths. This could be due to a number of reasons: most developing countries have a high growth rate because there is no awareness about family planning, and the need to control the number of births also, countries that have better medical facilities and living environment tend to have a low death rate which contributes to an increase in the population size. A low growth rate may be due to a high literacy rate and a low fertility rate among women and it may also be influenced by high infant mortality rate.

The rate at which the population of these regions doubles is calculated by first; multiplying the initial population by the growth rate, then, add this result to the initial population to derive the new population after ten years. This process would be carried out for every 10 year period until the population figure is double the original. According to growth rate worldwide, Montserrat is estimated to have the highest growth rate at 0.553 (which is a 10 year compounded growth rate). This growth rate is calculated to double in approximately 20 years. While on the other hand, Greenland and South Africa have the lowest growth rate at -0.091 and their population is estimated to double in 6890 years. These countries, as compared to other countries that have a moderate growth rate, may have an exceptionally large difference between the birth rate and the death rate in the case of high population growth and an exceptionally less difference in the case of low growth rate.

A country's growth rate being on either of the extreme ends (low or high) is undesirable for its well being. The leader of a country with a high growth rate which is increasing rapidly is burdened with the responsibility of catering to a larger population. As the size of the population increases it is natural that the resources will be used more swiftly and there is a danger that sufficient services would not be available to the people. Moreover, the management and organization of a large population is far more complicated than a smaller population. On the contrary, the leader of a population that has a low growth rate may tend to experience a lack of man power and human resource to support the economy and industries. Less population would mean that there are fewer workers to sustain the country.

To estimate the time in which the population of the world doubles itself we would multiple 0.123 (growth rate) with 6 billion (population) and add to the 6 billion to reach to the population after 10 years. This figure is approximately 6738000. by following the process we arrive to the conclusion that the population of the world would start to double after 60 years.

In the end, it is important to understand that the figures provided in the growth rate worldwide predict the future estimates of population in different parts of the world. These estimations give a better understanding of which areas need to be educated about birth control and which areas need programs to promote births. Future plans and strategies of countries can be formulated with respect to the population rate and the future population of the country and thus proves as a helpful tool in decision making.
