Introduction
BYOD refers to the bringing of ones’ device to an organization. As Yaacov notes, the devices should be used for work(Egan, 2013). Thus, the paper attempts to delve into the analysis of the article by the tech republic on the dark side of BYOD as well as the article by Forbes on BYOD as we know it is dead. The analysis is geared towards establishing the primary benefits of the BYOD organization, determining the vital areas in which the concepts can facilitate in the enhancement of the overall experience of working for the end users. It also aims to analyze the major risks that surround BYOD as well as the security controls and the technologies that are available currently. It provides a real life example of the effect of BYOD.
The primary benefit of BYOD is the allowance to perform duties of the work by the use of the mobile device. It allows for the working between the employee with the customer, a review of the contracts as well as writing of the blog posts. Besides, BYOD entails the world expression that is more engaging. BYOD ensures that the user has a great experience. Employers want the work done as it forms the core of the business, however, the employee requires convenience and an experience that will foster the attainment of the objectives of the organization(Contributor, 2013).
The major risks involve hacking, sharing of the private organization’s information, expensive lawsuits and financial penalties as well as lost business. The management of the risk involves the closing of the collaboration tools that are unauthorized andinstitution of changes in the policy. It also involves proactive governance that ensures that there is transparency in the management practices of the change(Contributor, 2013).
A survey by the uSamp recently found that almost more than 40% of the business users of the mobile phone have employed services that are unsanctioned to share as well as sync the files despite the knowledge of the sharing policy in the company that prohibits the practice(Contributor, 2013; Smith, 2013). Almost 30% of the users that decided to contravene the risks had repercussions that were direct as well as immediate. These comprise of lost businesses and financial penalties. They also had expensive lawsuits that amounted to almost $ 2 billion(Contributor, 2013). In addition, a large NGO was hacked after several teams in the organization used Dropbox without the consent of the IT.
I would consider implementing the concepts of BYOD in a real organization, however, there will be the need to have protections that are sufficient as well as governance practices. They will facilitate in the management of the risks that have the potential of occurring. Those that equate governance with the hierarchical and the bureaucracy systems have perceptions that arise from lacking appreciation of the risks that can take place(Smith, 2013).
The benefits of the BYOD outweigh the risks. The BYOD ensures that the customer is at the center of the business, thus fostering customer loyalty to organizations. The risks need to be managed properly to facilitate in the increase of the business activities that result in an increase in revenue. As such, despite the risks that BYOD poses, the benefits are significant as they can result in an increase in the effectiveness of the organizations in the industry that they operate in(Egan, 2013).
Conclusion
BYOD is key to the advancement of business in the rapidly changing IT environment. Thus, it is important for firms to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the technology. However, the change should be implemented with the consideration of the management of the risks
