What is the larger problem that Willie Smits is up against, i.e. more than orangutans in Indonesia.
Willie Smits describes deforestation as a global problem that he is trying to combat. He describes deforestations as the major cause of the reduction in the population of species in forests and destruction of the earth’s ecosystem while putting more emphasis on orangutans in Indonesia as an excellent case of the devastating effects of deforestation (Smits). Additionally, he argues that the major cause of deforestation is the demand for timber for the production of biofuels amongst fuel producing economies. He also suggests that another major cause of deforestation is forest fires that constantly cause destructions of trees. He is for the thought that increased deforestations would translate to an increase in Carbon dioxide emission that would be catastrophic to the earth’s ecosystems and co-existence of different type of species. He also argued that they may trigger volcanic eruptions if not mitigated soon.
Define a “wicked problem” and frame this issue as a wicked problem.
A wicked problem can be described as an issue that is considered unsolvable due to the increase of alterations of the values at hand. The issue of deforestation can be regarded as a wicked problem since there are always a variety of issues that pop up pertaining the adverse negative effects of deforestation, thus there has to be adjustments and developments of the ways in which each of these each of these effects can be mitigated. For instance, deforestation can be said to lead to a reduction in agricultural productivity, increase the rate of soil erosion, a drastic reduction in the number of wildlife species, an increase in the number of droughts, severe changes in climate, and reduction in the level of fertility of the soil etcetera. These issues would tend to increase in number over time, and thus measures should be introduced over time to encourage increased mitigation of these particular issues.
How does considering this as a wicked problem help us understand our options?
Describing Deforestation as a wicked problem would enable us to have a broader scope of how to manage the adverse effects of this vice. For instance, for deforestation to be reduced, full involvement of the local community need to be considered, whereby they should be educated on what deforestation entails and the major problems that might be associated with deforestation. The notion of responsibility should be instilled in the local community to ensure that they effectively defend their environment, particularly the forests. After that, a variety of principles should be introduced to ensure that they are fully motivated towards combating deforestation. They may include the principle of transparency, management of the required resources for afforestation, and formulation of targets to achieve to ensure that the objective of reducing deforestation is fully met. A recipe should be developed to ensure that labor is adequately factored, adequate government involvement is achieved, and formulation of a feasible business plan effectively takes place and finally the introduction of a work plan. With these key steps, it can be concluded that key desirable results can be obtained from this particular exercise.
