There is a great need for the organizations to either build up new lines or better the performance of the existing ones. Before deciding on the course of action to take, the organization needs to explore the various factors within it. The paper examines assessment of the viability of the Trinity community Hospital to develop an orthopedic new service line.
The service line for the evaluation of the feasibility of the Hospital to develop is the orthopedic center. There is a high expectation for the rapid growth in the need for the orthopedic service in the primary service area in the coming five years. There is an expectation for the orthopedic cases to climb from 11,800 to 17,338, an indication that there is going to be an increase in the need for more treatment and new types of treatment. There is also an expectation of an increase in the procedures for the joint inpatient spine by thirty percent. Moreover, there is an expectation for the outpatient spine and joint procedures to increase by three hundred and fifty percent, thereby necessitating the development of the new line. The trends are the need for an increase in the treatment due to the expectation in the growth of the need of the orthopedic services and new treatments due to the need for the orthopedic services in the primary service line. The other trend is on the increasing the procedure for the joint inpatient and outpatient spine treatment. In the development of the new line, the incorporation of the trends is by developing the line that will cater for the new treatments and creation of procedures within the line that will cater for the thirty percent increase in both joint inpatient and outpatient spine requirements.
In the advancement of the new service line, the current health care trends gets incorporated because there are no official orthopedic programs despite the fact that a few orthopedic cardiologists and surgeons maintain privileges at the premises of the hospital. Therefore, in the development of the new service line, there is the need to incorporate official orthopedic programs. Moreover, there is the location of the premier orthopedic groups of the community close to the competing facilities, making it inconvenient for the group to perform more surgeries apart from the random ones. In the development of the new line, there is the need to open branch offices close to the hospital campus to allow performing of more surgeries. Moreover, there are two major competitors, the regional hospital and the tertiary medical center that competes with the orthopedic services. When developing the new service line, there is the need to develop highly differentiated services to enhance competition as well as setting the new service lines in areas with low levels of competition.
In the development of a new line, there is the need to establish a line that will act as complementary service line for the one developed. To complement the new service line, the care offered to the patients must be of high quality and that there is a safe environment for the patients, the staff, and the visitors. There is also the need to ensure that there is a high priority for the excellence of the services given to the patients. An excellent service line should also offer room for the training, therefore, the need to create a favorable environment for the learning of the hospital and the medical staff members. The other complementary aspect is to ensure that the line complies with all the guidelines for the state and maintaining full accreditation by a relevant accrediting agency. The already existing department in the service is the department of the medical staff and the outstanding employees whose emphasis is on the provision of the extraordinary care and service to the patients. The existing services include the offering of the alike nourishing and delectable cuisine. The world known Russian dietitian prepares and directs the cuisine. The above service line complements the new service line by ensuring that the guests may order a meal to a family member deliverable through a room service in the hospital room. The medical staff also complements the new service line by ensuring that the patients gets extraordinary care and services while in the new developed line. The location of the hospital in a pleasant environment and provision of broad range of surgical, medical and support services further complements the new service line by ensuring that there is the availability of all the needed services in the hospital and an enabling environment for the patients.
From the analysis of the financial and the operating data, there is feasibility to institute the new service line. There was a steady decline in the utilization of the community hospital over the previous three years. Moreover, despite the declining volume of the patient that results in the deterioration of the key indicators of the financial status of the hospital, there is some capital reserve by the hospital of $ 25,000,000. Most of this reserve is for funding the capital expenditures anticipated for the orthopedic and other cardiovascular initiatives. Therefore, the hospital is feasible to institute the new service line. The additional information and support on the financial feasibility of the development of the orthopedic service is on the growth and profitability. There are the projected cases of surgery of 2100 and the visit for the physical therapy of 6500. The projected collections from this progress are $ 2,171,500, which is an indication of further feasibility to develop the new service line.
There is a way of targeting and marketing to physicians to attain medical appointment services. The best way is by conducting interviews to the neurosurgeons and the orthopedics to confirm that the securing of the physicians is the main concern. The other way is by adding the imaging apparatus, suites for the surgical operations and additional capacity for the physical rehabilitation. After the development of the new service line, Trinity may market and generate referrals to the providers through the creation of a broad awareness of the needs of the healthcare of the community. Through the creation of awareness, the hospital creates business as the community gets information of the services they may acquire from the hospital hence make referrals for the services. The other aspect is through ensuring that the care for the patients is of high quality consistently and that the environment is safe for the patients. In this manner, there is the generation of business due to the increased need of the quality services for the patients.
The recommendations of the next steps to develop and implement the orthopedic service line are to create the need for teamwork, building trust, and partnerships with the hospitals and the orthopedic surgeons when working to offer high value and customer focused services (Buckley, Gilpin & Barnes, 2013). The specific response to this aspect is by carrying an assessment of the needs of the community health. The assessment makes use of information from the numerous sources like surveys, conducting interviews with the health care professionals and the community focus group when developing the service line to ensure coverage of all the health needs. Therefore, the new line will be operational since it caters for all the assessed needs.
