Role of Sarty`s sisters in the ‘Barn Burning’
Sarty has two twin sisters. The sisters are important in the book because they show the class of the family economically. Starting from the way they dress as described in the book show that sarty’s family is not doing well. Their father who is the reason for their poverty seems to be pushing them more and more into it. He burns people’s barns and this has caused them to move from one home to another thus causing their instability and poverty.
The sisters also play the role of bringing out sibling rivalry in the book. Sarty is brought out as having a great dislike of his sisters. According to Faulkner (5), he thinks they are spoilt and one would easily think they had done something to him. He does not show any pity or brotherly love to his sisters.
The sisters also help bring out love in the book. Their mother is seen to often preventing them from many struggles in the instance where she does not want them to clean the rag. She loves them and does not wish to see them struggle or be subjected to any form of hardships. She always does all the chores leaving none to the two sisters.
The two sisters also exhibit laziness. They are not willing to help their mother do the chores. This could also be described in their dressing where they dress in torn clothes. They are lazy and take advantage of their mother’s love. They are unkempt as described by the author thus showing the level of their laziness, yet they are ladies. The two sisters bring out jealousy in Sarty whereby he dislikes them and his actions may be because he feels jealous because of his mother’s affection towards them.
Why do you think they have been described in this way
They are ironically described as hulking. This is because the family is poor, they move from place to place and have nowhere to call home but besides all this the two sisters are fat. They are also described as being bovine to show that regardless of them being poor they are also freeloaders. They should be working hard to improve their lives and also appreciating the little that they have but instead, they complain about the places they go.
The two sisters are described as being bovine to show their lack of liveliness. According to Faulkner (5), they are dull and lazy probably the reason Sarty has a dislike for them. They do not show humour in the story and are always dull as well as lazy. The reason behind their behaviour is mainly because of the harsh situations that they have had to undergo because of their fathers behaviour.
What does their curious behaviour imply about the Snopes family?
The behaviour of the twins shows the instability of the family. The way they dress together with their looks shows the family is poor and struggling. They do not have a home and are often running because of justice. Their behaviour also portrays love in the family which is brought out in the way their mother treats them. She does not want them overworked and tries to do the work given to them she. When they are given rags to clean, she takes and cleans them herself.
