Double standards behind the perspectives of men and women
Introduction
In the modern day world, the issue of double standards has been widely applied. In broad terms, the principle of double standards refers to cases where a rule is unfairly applied. This means that this rules are applied on different magnitudes to different people. The application of this standards range from the factors of one being a male or female (Nagel 308). This has become an issue of concern in today’s society as many people are arguing of the different double standards that are being applied between men and women. This debates focus on examining who is more focused and the reason they are being focused. It also looks at examining who receives the hardest target or expectations.
The issue of double standards has been existence for a long period of time. However, people in the modern day world are trying to drop the barriers. This is with a focus on moving away from them as they have been embedded on society. This effort has to take several considerations in society so as to bear fruits. Some of the considerations include where it is possible to make changes or should such vises be allowed to continue nourishing in society (Dayton 1639-1789). A research conducted on several people concerning double standards revealed several suggestions arising from different people. Some men argued that the issue of double standards is quite weird on society and that they are wrong. However some people argued that such matters will always exists. Different people agreed that the issue of double standards are rampant and that this will continue in the lives of people in society.
At this point, we look at the different forms of double standards that exist in society. One of the most common forms of double standards that are evident in society is the sexual standard. It is evident that women are judged more harshly than men for doing the same behavior. Taking for example a case of casual sex, a woman would be judged on a harsh way than the man. According to the society, it is commonly women who are referred to as casual workers. Women are referred to as sluts but men in this case are seen as studs (Fraser 1-32). Cases are that when women date men for the first time, they are left worrying if they can give in to sex for the first time. They are also left worrying what their partners could be left thinking of them. It can turn out if they had sex on the first date then men can judge the lady as an easy goer. However, not giving in to sex during the first date would also worry the lady that the man could think that they are not respectful or the wife material.
Another example is that unlike men, women do not boast around with names of ladies they have had sex with. This appears too wrong for a lady but rather very okay with a man. Men usually support an on demand erection in that they request for sex not minding the time, place or even the circumstances that exist. It is for sure that men do not show the bedtime headaches as women do with a ‘no’ feeling to sex (Okin 106). Another case is where women do much of the home care duties. Both men and women have ideas about home upkeep but it is the women who do much concerning the house hold chores. If it happed that a man had a messy home just like a woman with a messy home, then the woman would be judged more harshly than the man.
However women might argue that they have more important things to do but this does not give them a chance to keep messy homes. No one bothers questioning a man about having a messy home as this seems quite normal for every person. The issue of body weight and being overweight has been tacked with a focus on double standards on many societies. It is true that men and women experience the fat and overweight prejudice (Macklin 288). However, women feel much societal pressure with the issue of overweight compared to men with the same conditions. The society has a negative view on women having such shortcomings. This means that a man faces a much lesser prejudice than a lady having the same condition of fatness or overweight cases.
In the case of a man and a woman who both talk too much about themselves. We notice that the society keeps a different eye on the woman as opposed to the man. The woman can be described as bossy and that she’s full of pride. Other people might refer the lady to as aggressive or arrogant. For the man, talking too much of themselves could just be described as an executive skill for the man displaying leadership skills (Dayton 1639-1789). For the man, it is seen as an advantage and attracting benefits to the man while for the lady it is a shortcoming. With this reasoning, it means that the man is more advantaged on the society with what he does than the lady doing the same things.
In cases where women lack children, they are referred by the society as selfish. However, the society believes that at a point in time they, must regret on their decision for not bearing kids. Every other woman is expected to be a mother and if it happened that a woman is not having children then they seemed unnatural. This experiences do dot face men either. The society’s view of being a dad isn’t vied to be of great importance. This means that it is not essential for the man to have children as a way of qualifying for his manhood (Nagel 308). Additionally, men have more chances to decide whether they want kids or not. For the women they are compelled by men to bear kids or even sometimes find themselves already in to it. It does not necessarily mean that women do not have a way of controlling or deciding when to have kids but rather they are likely to get kids without their informed consent.
A different form of double standards that the society places on men and women is the issue of single fathers who are rather seen as hard workers. In comparison, single women are simply seen to be defective. It seems very obvious that every lady is objected to getting married and give birth to kids. More of create a family where she has to do much of the things concerning the family than the man of the family (Fraser 1-32). Some incidences would also require that the woman and also the mother in a family takes up other roles that ought to be taken by the man like becoming the family breadwinner.
The issue of success has been addressed differently by the society on the basis of the double standards placed on men and women. The society argues that men succeed out of hard work (Okin 106). For women, the issue of success is commonly attributed to looks and relationships that they could have with some successful men in the society. It is commonly argued that success does not just come to a lady out of hard work. Many people attribute tokenism as the key way to success by women. On the field of politics, the issue of double standards too manifest itself. Men in politics can be butt ugly. For women in politics, they are often scrutinized based on the sense of fashion.
In conclusion we can broadly classify the double standards view in society in to two main categories. One is the sex oriented double standard and the gender based double standard. The sexual double standard basically revolves on the principle of evolution. There are speculations in society that, men were not made for monogamy but women are. Sociology and what it dictates has a lot of impacts on what people do and think in society. This means that it is what the society attaches to different people that lead them to this forms of double standards. On the issue of gender, the female gender faces a lot of oppression from society and that is exactly what leads to the issue of double standards placed on people within society on the basis of gender. Roles have changed over time and interests too have changed. Looking at the modern day world, ladies even play rugby and football. Men, attend dancing classes and the society has accepted this over time. However, when it comes to the issue of sex and gender the society has not accepted to end the issue of double standards. This means that there is a likelihood that the double standard issue will continue to the future centuries.
