The job that I do is mechanical engineering. The duties under this job are as follows: Ensuring equipment functional through coordinating repair and maintenance services, Conducting evaluation process on electromechanical and mechanical systems and devices through designing and conducting research, using mechanics of thermodynamics, mechanics, , heat transfer, hydraulics and materials, ensuring professional and technical knowledge by going to educational workshops, Confirming system and product capabilities by designing testing methods, testing properties, colleting observations from operators, Assuring system and product quality by designing testing methods; testing completed product and system capabilities; confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes, Preparing product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends, giving out engineering information by responding to questions and request, Maintaining product and company reputation by conforming with government regulations, abiding by manufacturer’s instructions and ways established , unique services requisition, Maintaining system and product data base by writing computer programs and filling data, Completing projects by training and guiding technicians, Developing mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer requirements; researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials Developing manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components, reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies, Contributing to team effort by accomplishing related results as required.
Basically, the perfect areas for application of my mechanical engineering skills will be in a construction industry which designs and builds infrastructure, buildings and building services. Examples of these activities include bridge erection, excavation, demolitions and large scale painting jobs.
Consequently, the perfect setting for mechanical engineer in a construction industry would be; The presence of an office where the meeting up with other professionals such as the executives of a company, marketing, sales and other types of engineers would be made possible to assemble the necessary materials for the design of a particular project. After the singling out of the requirements, the office may be used by the engineer in designing and drafting applications to design specifications of the mechanical device required with the aid of a computer. This process leads to the development of a prototype.
The second setting of a construction industry is a test laboratory. The presence of a test laboratory in a construction industry is crucial to a mechanical engineer as she or he needs to spend time creating and testing the needed prototype. The test laboratory provides the engineer with the ability to use equipment and machinery in ensuring that the device of properly calibrated and perfectly working. Incase of any necessary changes to be made to the designed specifications, the laboratory makes it easier for them to revise the designed specifications and retest the prototype in the laboratory until it is fully and properly functional.
The third setting of a construction industry is a manufacturing plant. After the completion of the prototype and proving its completeness and functionality in accordance to its specifications, an engineer will require to work on the manufacturing plant to ensure proper production of the device. The engineer may as well offer any necessary support in terms of instructions to the production teams on what best way to assemble the device.
The fourth setting is a test field. After the successful manufacture of a mechanical device, mechanical engineer will require a test field that will enable him or her to work on site in the field to ensure the proper installation and functionality of the installed device. After the installation of the device, the engineer may inspect the device, carry out tests or observe how the device operates. Through all these work in the field by the engineer, he or she may find or come up with new ways to improve the functioning of the device These settings can be described under four main criteria;
· Behavioral criteria which can be discussed in two broad ways.
The first way to describe behavioral criteria is by:
Functional conformance.
The office should have proper communication system to facilitate the free flow of information in and out of the organization, a proper working computer to aid in the creation of perfect prototype designs.it is also important to have good furniture to enable the comfortability of the person working in the office.
A construction industry test laboratory should have all the necessary materials required to aid the proper testing of prototypes made by the industry
A good manufacturing plant should be fitted with proper and state of art machinery necessary in the field of construction of industries targeted prototypes. There should also be steady supply of energy for example electricity supply so as to ensure efficiency in the process
Spatial conformance
The office, test laboratories and manufacturing plants should provide adequate space to enable proper functioning of each of the sections in achieving its objectives with each of the individual workers with ample and safe working areas. Hallways and corridors should be well space to allow movement of furniture prototypes and also a mass of people in case of emergencies like fire outbreaks. The office and the test laboratories should also be placed near to each other in order to smoothen the management operations.
· Physiological criteria is the second broad way
There are two broad ways to describe the physiological aspect:
Climate.
The office, test laboratories and plants should be well ventilated or sealed according on the activities that goes on in each section. Appropriate temperatures should be provided in order for the creation of a particular prototype or to allow for the perfect testing conditions of a created design of a prototype. Cooling systems like funs and air conditioners should be fitted in the needed sections mentioned above to enable cooling incase of high temperatures so as to favors the health of the people working in the offices, test laboratories and the manufacturing plants. Temperature regulatory garments may also be used
Hazard regulations.
Electrical appliances should be well incubated and properly positioned to avoid any shocks to the people working, air pollution control systems should be put into consideration at the time of construction of the manufacturing plant and test laboratory to avoid any test damage that may occur to the workers and the environment surrounding them. Garments that might prevent any possible infections from occurring to the people working in the laboratory and in the manufacturing plants should be worn at all times. The floors should not be slippery to avoid instances in which workers might slip up and injure themselves in the process of working .Recycling of waste products should be considered in order to minimize pollutants being emitted to the environment.
· Perceptual maintenance is the third broad criteria:
Using the perceptual maintenance criteria the point can be discussed in two broad way:
Sensory initiation.
The environment in the workplace should be designed in a way to allow the proper working of sensory functions; Adequate lighting should be provided to ensure the completion of each and every task at the required time and ensure proper visibility .Flood lights can also be fitted to ensure the security places and smooth carrying out of tests in the test fields during the night which ensures efficiency and effectiveness in the carrying out of tasks assigned.
Sensory conformance
The perceptual environment around the workers should be made in a way that makes it possible for the workers to be able to reach an optimal possible stimulus condition, workers should easily perceive possible stimulus around them and be able to correlate it with their work areas or requirements.
· Social facilitation is the fourth and last broad criteria
Social facilitation is grouped into two broad ways as discussed below:
Social initiation.
Under this criteria offices should be made in a way to assure privacy to each office manager in all the departments. This brings about sense or recognition and motivates office owners to work on new construction ideas that bring about innovation
Social isolation.
Under this criteria office allocations and private desks should be initiated to allow for private performance of activities by the workers in the offices. Allocation of sections in the test laboratories and the manufacturing plants according to activities or tasks performed, prototypes create, tests and designs created also increases the privacy by allowing people to only work in their areas of specifications minimizing unnecessary movements and sharing of places of work
