Race and gender inequality

Gender is the range of characteristics between masculinity and femininity which may include gender identity, biological sex or social structures such as gender roles. Some cultures have distinct gender roles of female and male. In some areas of social sciences, gender includes sex or replaces it (Acker 441). Many cultures have different beliefs and norms based on gender. Gender roles are always centered on conceptions of masculinity and femininity even though there are variations and exceptions. Society expects people to behave and look in a certain way depending on their biological sex. Females are expected to look and act feminine while males masculine. Some people are treated in such a way that they feel like the society`s expectation don`t fit or work for them at all (Reskin 707).
On my own opinion, Gender inequality is the perception and treatment of people based on their gender. It arises from differences in socially constructed gender roles. Even in most advanced countries, women always have fewer opportunities than men to benefit from economic development with lower participation in the labor force. Gender equality is important because it helps reduce poverty in the society (Altonji 3143). There are a lot of women suffering who are not supposed to be suffering and it would only take someone to empower and encourage them and that would immensely bring about the change. By empowering women a country is empowered too. A bright future full of inputs from the society and full of ideas is only achieved when all people are valued as equals.
Local customs, attitudes and norms relating to the role of men and women in the society often creates barriers to women`s participation because they are expected to undertake most of their roles on domestic chores in the home, giving them unlimited time to participate in producer groups (Altonji 3145). Increasing participation of women farmers could provide opportunities to launch new product, improve development outcomes for communities and also boost productivity. It would be recommendable for businesses to invest in gender analysis of their supply chains, before creating an action plan and a gender policy. It would also be recommendable for governments in producer countries to include targeting women with programmes such as ensuring that loans and full support reach people who do not own land, agronomy training and implement programmes that address the barriers facing women farmers.
Race is a way of categorizing groups and individuals on the basis of particularly one`s color and also physical characteristics (Reskin 708). Racism can be present in practices, political systems or even social actions. Ethnicity is the division of human groups based on inmate to the group or qualities presumed to be essential. Race and ethnicity are ways of seeing and understanding the world. The society has made huge progress in trying to eradicate racial discrimination but still injustice and inequality remains. Historically the most victims of racial discrimination are the members of subordinate group.
Racial and ethnic discrimination should be eradicated since it can tear down a country or even a society. People who face racial discrimination may plan vengeance in mind against other groups. This can trigger social discords and conflicts (Altonji 3157). Businesses and communities that do not take strong action on discrimination their productivity tend to be lower. This is because people lose interest in working hard, they feel lowered. There is always a drop on trust, confidence and morale among employees. Even people with abilities, talents and skills are no longer attracted to these places simply because they do not want to be discriminated against.
Racial discrimination can tear a society or a country down because it leads to disunity which results in the dissolving of a society through war or strife hence world peace can never be attained (Acker 452). Discrimination is wrong because it is selfish, parents can raise their children and teach them not to discriminate against others. It could lead to more fighting and tension within groups and people.
Discrimination is a threat to democracy, which is predicated on the idea of a society based on wealth; ethnic origin and gender have been eliminated with an aim to achieving equality. Democracy recognizes equal rights and worth of all people whereby, equality discourages discrimination which is the cornerstone of human rights. Therefore, strict laws should be put in place against discrimination to those who discriminate. Even if they didn`t know that their actions were discriminatory (Altonji 3200). Individuals and employees can impose legal action on the individual or business that does the act of discrimination. This is because the discriminated group may feel discouraged and seize from associating or even networking with those who are related to a certain group based on religious preferences, culture, gender or race.
